What exactly is the Family Lights The World event?
In essence, the Family Lights The World event is a Family Night and a light celebration on Monday, October 26th. It is a social media event and is not hosted from one, single location, but from your own homes, neighborhoods and communities——with families in charge.
We encourage families to host your own Family Night around 7:00pm (in whatever time zone you’re in) and then to join with families all over the world at 7:30pm (your time) to simultaneously shine your flashlights, lanterns or beams into the sky as a united symbol that families shine God’s light into the world.
For your convenience, we are providing a Family Night lesson with resources to teach your family about the doctrine of the family.

I’ve never heard of Family Night. Where does that term come from?
In LDS, or Mormon, culture, Family Night (also called Family Home Evening) is a time to strengthen family ties. We do this by learning the gospel together, by listening to each other’s feelings, thoughts and ideas, and by enjoying activities together. It is usually held on Monday evenings.
Why is Gathering Families encouraging families to join in the Family Lights The World event?
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the inspired document The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It’s also the 100th Anniversary of Family Night. In addition, it’s the first time in history that the World Congress of Families will be hosted in the United States. The World Congress of Families is the world’s premier pro-family gathering. They will be holding their annual conference at the Grand America hotel in Salt Lake City, UT from Tuesday, October 27 – Friday, October 29. Here, dignitaries from around the world will be speaking about the blessings that the natural family brings to society and help families learn about the societal trends impacting families. Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be giving the keynote address.
While not all families can attend the World Congress of Families conference, most families CAN participate in the Family Lights the World event. This event gives all families the opportunity to stand together to support the World Congress of Families’ efforts, and to stand as witnesses to God’s Plan of Happiness for families.
How can we make our families participation in this social media event a success?
As part of the Family Lights The World event, your Family Night will have the power to impact families around the world. We hope families will take time to “light up” social media pictures and video of your participation.

I’m thinking about having a big Family Night on the lawn of our Church building or park so that neighbors can gather together for the Family Lights The World event. Do I need to coordinate with Gathering Families to do this?
No. You are in charge. Take our fliers around your neighborhood and get permission to use Church or park facilities. Families around the world are gearing up for the Family Lights The World event in different ways. Some are hosting a large event for their community (see St. George, Utah event below) where speakers will speak and music will be shared before the Lighting Ceremony.
Other families are simply planning to have a Family Night in their home and walk out onto their front lawn at 7:30pm (in the time zone where they live) to be part of the light celebration and shine their lights into the sky. The beauty of the Family Lights the World event is that you can make it as big or as small as you would like. We encourage you to consider the needs of your own families and to make this night meaningful for them.
So, families in St. George, UT are going to have a community Family Lights The World event? What will that be like?
Some awesome St. George, UT moms decided to create their own fliers and are working at securing park grounds for their event. They went to their LDS Stake President and asked if they could get the Family Lights The World event listed in LDS ward bulletins.
They are planning to have a well-known family speak and then to hear uplifting music from a family choir and a youth choir. Families are being encouraged to come with a picnic dinner, chairs and blankets. They are also encouraged to bring as many flashlights, lanterns and beams as they would like to light up the sky with the light of family!
